Savor Summer on the Shore

Top Ocean County Attractions to Explore This August

Summer’s not over yet! There’s no better time to soak in the sunshine, salt air, and local charm of Ocean County, NJ than August. Whether you already call this coastal county home or you’re thinking about making the move to Cottages at Compass Point, August is your chance to enjoy all the best this region has to offer.

Here are some of our favorite ways to make the most of summer near Barnegat:

1. Explore Barnegat Bay

Just minutes from our active adult community, Barnegat Bay offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Bring your kayak, paddleboat, and fishing gear for a day on the waterways. Rent boats nearby at The Boatyard and Marina or stay on the bay for the weekend at their new houseboats.

Hop on a scenic cruise at nearby marinas with local favorites like Miss Barnegat Light. Don’t forget your camera—sunsets here are unforgettable.

2. Hit the Beach

Ocean County is home to some of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the Jersey Shore. Spend a day lounging at Island Beach State Park, a preserved barrier island off the coast protecting our natural shoreline. Spend the day swimming in the ocean or surf fishing from the sandy shores. The southern most tip of the park offers a gorgeous view of the Barnegat Lighthouse.

Dip your toes into the Atlantic Ocean on Long Beach Island, just a short drive away. Lifeguards are on duty daily in-season through Labor Day at each of the six beaches along the island. Beach badges are available for the season!

3. Stroll Through Historic Downtowns

Looking for charm and character? Visit downtown Toms River or historic Viking Village, where you can shop for handmade goods, browse antique stores, and sip an iced coffee at a local café. Keep an eye out for summer markets and pop-up events! A bit further south is Historic Smithville, with 50 shops stretched across the cobblestone walkways and foot bridges in Atlantic County.

4. Dine Dockside

You don’t need to travel far to find incredible waterfront dining. Grab a bite at Mud City Crab House or The Baithouse at The Boatyard, where the seafood is fresh, the drinks are cold, and the vibes are pure summer. The Waterfront Restaurant on the Forked River has indoor and outdoor dining, food and drink specials, and live entertainment.

5. Discover Nature Trails & Parks

Want a change of pace from the beach? Take a peaceful stroll at Cloverdale Farm County Park or visit Wells Mills County Park for shady trails, picnic spots, and scenic boardwalks. It’s a great way to connect with nature (and escape the summer heat).
